Prior to 1937 was photographer in Brodick, Isle of Arran and later in Wembley. He moved to St Albans after his marriage. He was always a freelance photographer but worked a lot for the Methodist Times and also for the Methodist Recorder where he was in all but name a staff photographer. He also suppled photos to many other papers on Fleet Street.

Edward or 'Tats' as he was more familiarly known was well known to a few of us still linked with the Recorder. We have some tributes that went into the paper when he died. His biggest legacy to the Recorder are the hundreds of historic photos and slides which Edward's widow eventually sold to the paper.

On Monday afternoon of this week Brodick suffered a communal loss through the departure for London of Mrs Tattersall and her son, Mr E. W. Tattersall, the well-known photographer and local correspondent of various newspapers. Mrs Tattersall's health has not been satisfactory for some years back, and a change to the drier atmosphere of the South was rendered imperative although it meant the sundering of many ties. Her work in Brodick in connection with the Church and all other helpful services of humanity was widely appreciated by the community at large, and it is hoped that her health may be speedily restored to her in the new home that must be formed in England. Mr E. W. Tattersall leaves many friends behind him in this new adventure he is called upon to serve in. His industry whilst here in founding a paying business, superintending the creation of an Arran home and giving largely of his best to musical organizations whilst acting as the chief consoler and companion of his suffering parent merits the warmest esteem from the Brodick public.

"Beating the bans"

IF ANYONE knows how to stop long-winded speakers it's Edward Tattersall. At the age of 83 he's been awarded a Queen's Silver Jubilee medal - after a lifetime as a photographer.

Edward, who lives with his wife in King Harry Lane, St Albans, beat a picture ban at ministerial sessions of the Methodist Conference for seven years by secreting himself behind a curtain.

And one year, in an open session, he halted a speaker's rhetoric in full flow by letting off a flash-bulb a few feet away as the conference cheered him.

"After that, every time someone was going on for what seemed a long time, the conference called out to me, 'shoot him, shoot him!'" said Edward, whose favourite subject is ... landscapes.

"Photo veteran":

RETIRED freelance photo-journalist Mr Edward Tattersall died at home last week.

Mr Tattersall, 93, of King Harry Lane, St Albans, worked up until two years before his death and his work appeared in many national newspapers, magazines and calendars.

Mr Tattersall's photographic career began after he was rejected by the forces on health grounds when World War One broke out.

A life-long Methodist, he also worked for the Methodist Recorder, which was printed at the former Herts Advertiser works in Dagnall Street, St Albans, for about 30 years. He was awarded the Jubilee Medal for his work for the country.

Mr Tattersall leaves a widow, retired nurse Marta. The funeral service was held on Wednesday.
