Tyril had a small holding near Chester. He later had a taxi business, but when war was declared in 1939 he had to go into aircraft production.

Tyril was so named because his father Charles Hutchings and Charles's brothers and sisters were orphaned and all sent to different places.

At about the age of 8, Charles was sent to an orphanage in Cheltenham and his great friend there was a boy called Tyril so Charles and Emily decided to call their second baby boy Tyril.
