From: Claire Bodilly:
Henry was a cab proprieter and Emma worked/managed several pubs in Cheltenham - the last as Hotel and Pub keeper at the Old Swan in Cheltenham High Street. They had 13 children!!
My Grandfather, who married her granddaughter (Emma's daughter Edith's daughter Elsie May MacVitie) seems to remember a 'fob' that was presented to her at the Swan.
I spent many teenage evenings in the Swan (not knowing the connection) and I do remember an old carriage at the back of the building where we used to sit outside - this could have been used by Henry and Emma in their cab business. Another place I must visit again, although it has changed names and had several refurbishments since then!
I know Granddad has a lot of photos from his wife's side of the family, but does not know who many of them are and sadly there are no names or dates on them.
Henry and Emma were also at the Royal Hotel Vaults prior to the Swan, a very grand place! (I think the Vaults, must have been a bar/pub at the back of the Royal Hotel, Albion Street runs parallel to the back of the Height Street. They are mentioned in a census as living in the Stables / Yard so probably ran the pub and stables for their cab business.
The Royal Hotel, High Street had an annual rateable value of Β£267.15s.0d in 1891 and Β£289.0s.0d in 1903. The Royal Hotel stood on the site which became occupied by Woolworths and has now been redeveloped as the Beechwood Shopping Centre. It was numbered 97 High Street in the original address system.

Duke of Sussex, 40 Swindon Road (was Pickled Duke, now Bar Cuba) GL50 4AS
On the western corner with St. Pauls Street South. The Duke of Sussex had an annual rateable value of Β£29.15.0d. in 1891 and 1903. The Duke of Sussex is still licensed. After many years of languishing as an ordinary Whitbread back street local it was bought by Mr. Cassidy in the late 1980's and for a decade traded as Cassidy's Bar. Arkells of Swindon acquired the pub in 1999. I had hoped that Arkells would change the name back to the Duke of Sussex. During June 2000 it was refurbished and new signs appeared heralding its new image - as the Pickled Duke. However, it must be confessed that the name Duke of Sussex is rather obscure so a slight modification was only to be expected. However, an opportunity was lost as it would have been better named as the Duke Dog which would have offered the opportunity for amusing pictorial signage as well as being relevant to Swindon - the Duke Dog was an early G.W.R. locomotive. But just over a year later the Pickled Duke sign was removed and the pub was reborn as Bar Cuba. When I wrote to Arkells they wrote: 'To compete on the High Street and fulfil a need of a majority of customers in the young world of inner town centres, we have to attract customers. We believe Bar Cuba will do this and sell beer and other drink products.' It appears that something went wrong as the pub is currently closed!

From: Annie Stuart:
1851 Henry was an agricultural worker. He had a Fly driving business in Cheltenham which his wife took over when he died. She later kept the Old Swan Public House in Cheltenham. John and Emma had 14 children all of whom survived their mother.
Old Swan Hotel, 37 High Street Cheltenham (O'Hagans Bar), GL50 1DY
The Old Swan Hotel had an annual rateable value of Β£68.0s.0d. in 1891 and 1903. 60 High Street in 1919 and 1939. I remember the Old Swan in the mid 1970's when it was an unspoilt multi-roomed traditional ale house. It was the haunt of folk musicians; the Old Swan Band took its name from the pub. Whitbread gutted the interior in the early 1980's but did add amicro brewery producing malt-extract 'home-brewed ales' on the premises.Unfortunately this venture did not last very long. It has been known as O'Hagans, a trendy Irish theme pub, since 1995. I wrote to the Gloucestershire Echo on 14th March 1995 with the following comments: "The refurbishment of the Old Swan public house in the High Street is nearing completion and it is soon to reopen with a new name and image. The Old Swan is to be replaced by the name O'Hagan's Bar, presumably in response to 'consumer demand' and the revamped pub will be aimed at the younger, more profitable sector of the market... The Old Swan is no more... "Six years later the pub is looking decidedly tatty and could benefit with a complete refurbishment ..back to the Old Swan Inn.
