In 2003 over 20,000 bodies were exhumed to make way for a commercial development. Some were re-interred at Southern and Blackley Cemeteries but the majority were re-interred in a mass grave at St Peter's Cemetery, Bury. The original cemetery is now the car park of Tesco. Apparently all the headstones were destroyed]
