CORONER'S INQUEST.-On Saturday last an inquest was held at the Glover's Arms, before the deputy coroner, touching the death of Dorcas Giles, the daughter of Henry Giles, aged 7 years. Charles Walbridge said he was 12 years old in Feb. last. He was in the employ of Mr Hawkins, of Preston, who on Wednesday last, sent him with a horse and cart to the railway station for 6 cwt of manure. On returning through Reckleford St. he saw some children before him, but he did not see the deceased till she ran in front of the horse. He pushed her on one side, but she ran forward, and he believed the horse knocked her down and the wheel passed over her head; he was leading the horse which came down the hill a jog-trot. Herbert Payne said he was riding in the cart when the deceased met with the accident. He saw the wheel pass over the head of deceased, but he did not see her before.-W. Seymour, glover, said that on Wednesday last he was in Reckleford St. when the deceased met with the accident; she ran across the road in front of the horse, but he could not say whether it was the horse or the shafts of the cart which knocked the deceased down. She however fell, and the wheel passed over her head, killing her on the spot.-The jury returned a verdict of accidental death, as it did not appear that Walbridge was furiously driving. One of the jury, however, said there was a great deal of furious driving in the streets and that it would be well for the police to have their attention drawn to the fact. There being no playground but the public roads, it was surprising that there were not many more accidents occur. Show more 🏛️ London Underground opens |
